The Altar Guild was organized in August 1957 by the late Bishop Reuben L. Speaks. The purpose of such an organization was to bring together a group of members, whose primary responsibility is the upkeep of the Altar.  Those members are chosen carefully because the work of the Altar Guild is a sacred trust, requiring persons, who are dedicated to the task.  The Altar Guild prepares the altar for Holy Communion by dressing the altar and pulpit in white, including fresh white flowers and white candelabras. Originally only women were members, but today there are male members. In 1973 Rev. Lawrence A. Miller reorganized the Altar Guild. The new duties included purchasing and arranging flowers, cleaning the brass candelabras, flower pots, and being advisors to the Acolytes.
